Congressman Greg Stuebe March 17, 2024

March 17, 2024

Dear Floridian:

The House passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act on Wednesday without my support. There is no doubt about it: TikTok is a dangerous app controlled by Chinese interests. However, the vague language of the bill raises troubling questions, particularly regarding potential executive branch overreach to shut down speech they don’t agree with. I opposed the bill to safeguard against the targeting of other social media companies and to protect our civil liberties.

I joined my colleagues in co-leading the Telehealth Modernization Act, a critical piece of legislation aimed at ensuring permanent access to telehealth services for Medicare beneficiaries, federally qualified health centers, and rural health clinics. This bill not only addresses the exponential growth of telehealth since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic but also recognizes its invaluable role as a complement, rather than a replacement, to in-person care.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our upcoming Mobile Office Hours at Venice City Hall on Thursday, March 21st. Whether you need assistance with a federal agency or have questions about recent legislation, my staff will be there to assist you.

Opposing the TikTok Bill

The House passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act without my support. There is no doubt about it: TikTok is a dangerous app controlled by Chinese interests. However, that does not mean the bill in front of the House was the appropriate solution to the national security threat TikTok imposes. The bill’s vague language, particularly in defining what constitutes being “subject to the direction or control of a foreign person or entity,” could lead to potential abuse by the executive branch. We shouldn’t give Biden’s DOJ any more power to shut down speech they don’t agree with, just eight months before the presidential election. Given the history of politically motivated accusations of false foreign affiliations, such as the Russia Hoax, I opposed the bill to safeguard against the targeting of other social media companies and to protect our civil liberties.

Co-leading Legislation to Ensure Permanent Telehealth for Seniors

I joined my colleagues in co-leading The Telehealth Modernization Act, a pivotal piece of legislation ensuring permanent access to telehealth services for Medicare beneficiaries while extending these essential flexibilities to federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics. This bill not only addresses the exponential growth of telehealth since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic but also recognizes its invaluable role as a complement, rather than a replacement, to in-person care. As your representative, I’ve heard that many in our district value the convenience and accessibility of telehealth services, especially our seniors and those residing in rural areas. By championing this legislation, we’re not only enhancing access to high-quality care but also providing certainty about the future of telehealth. It’s important to ensure that all Americans can benefit from timely healthcare regardless of their location or circumstances.

NATIONAL FIREARM INDUSTRY TRADE ASSOCIATION | House Committee Tackles Federal Government Weaponization

“Rep. Greg Stuebe (R-Fla.) was outraged that Americans are being targeted for government spying because they lawfully exercise their Second Amendment rights. ‘In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) at the U.S. Department of Treasury told major banks to be on the lookout for customers using credit and debit cards for the purchase of legal firearms,’ Rep. Steube said. ‘As a gun owner and a strong proponent of our Second Amendment rights, it’s appalling that a federal agency would ask private companies to spy on their customers conducting perfectly legal business transactions. It’s not like there’s a suspicion of criminality going on. These are just typical purchases of firearms.'”

NEWSMAX | TikTok Bill Could Threaten Truth Social

“Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., told Newsmax Wednesday that the language in the new bill seeking to ban TikTok in the United States could release ‘new power that’s been given to President [Joe] Biden, and he’s going to shut down and divest Truth Social from being able to communicate to their base … months before an election.'”

TAMPA FREE PRESS | Florida Rep. Greg Steube Joins Chorus Of Lawmakers Pushing To Ditch ‘Clock Change Madness’

“’Every year, Floridians and the nation grapple with the clock change chaos. But there’s solid evidence supporting permanent Daylight Saving Time,’ said Steube on X. ‘Studies show that instituting permanent DST would reduce vehicle and pedestrian accidents (better visibility), improve public safety (lower crime rates), and have a positive impact on our economy. Back in 2018, I pushed for this in Florida. Let’s ditch the clock-changing madness and make DST permanent!’ concluded Steube.”
