Congressman Greg Stuebe April 21, 2024

April 21, 2024

Dear Floridian:

This weekend, I supported sanctions on Iran and additional security assistance for our greatest ally in the Middle East, Israel, in their fight against terror. To this day there are still five American hostages in captivity, and we must ensure Israel has the tools to combat Iran, eradicate Hamas, and succeed in bringing every hostage home. House leadership also brought forth multiple foreign aid packages that provided additional funds for Ukraine, Taiwan, and more. I opposed these bills. If we’re going to approve an additional $100 billion dollars in foreign aid – especially while our southern border remains wide open – it needs to benefit Americans and America’s national security interests.

Iran is clearly emboldened by the Biden administration’s weakness. For too long, Iran has utilized proxy forces to execute their terror agenda in the region. This week, I introduced the Iranian Terror Prevention Act, alongside 59 of my colleagues. This crucial legislation aims to fully sanction 11 Iranian proxy organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

My legislation, the Preserving America’s Interests and Security in Trade Act, passed out of committee this week. America’s trade programs should align with our national security and advance our foreign policy goals. The essential reforms included in my bill will help ensure that the U.S. uses GSP to counter the growing aggression of countries like China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea.

Supporting Security Assistance for Israel, While Opposing Other Foreign Aid Bills

This weekend, I supported sanctions on Iran and $26 billion dollars of security assistance for our greatest ally in the Middle East, Israel, in their fight against terror. The package replenishes the Iron Dome and David’s Sling systems, as well as procures defensive weapons, artillery, and munitions. Additionally, the package helps the U.S. military restock the defense articles we supplied to Israel. We must ensure Israel has the tools to combat Iran, eradicate Hamas, and that we can succeed in bringing every hostage home. Aside from the Israel security legislation, House leadership brought multiple foreign aid packages to the House floor to fund Ukraine, Taiwan, and more. I opposed these bills. We’ve already sent over $112 billion dollars to Ukraine with zero accountability on how it was spent. We are $34 trillion in debt and we can’t continue sending money all over the world. If we’re going to approve $100 billion dollars, it needs to benefit Americans and America’s national security interests.

Introducing The Iranian Terror Prevention Act

I introduced the Iranian Terror Prevention Act, alongside 59 of my colleagues. This crucial legislation aims to fully sanction 11 Iranian proxy organizations as foreign terrorist organizations. For too long, Iran has utilized proxy forces to execute their terror agenda in the region, with American blood on their hands dating back decades. In addition to the unprecedented attack directly from Iran on Israel, we’ve seen ramped up, repeated proxy attacks on U.S. troops and our other allies in the Middle East. Iran is clearly emboldened by the Biden administration’s weakness. Washington has failed to designate most of the Iranian-backed militias as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. No more excuses. My legislation takes urgent, necessary actions to fully sanction these terrorist groups who hate our country and ensure the full weight of the Foreign Terrorist Organization designation is harshly felt. It’s time to take bold action against these threats and ensure the safety of Americans and our allies.

Advancing the Preserving America’s Interests and Security in Trade Act

I’m excited to share that my legislation, the Preserving America’s Interests and Security in Trade Act, has advanced as a provision in H.R. 7986, The Generalized System Preferences Reform Act. The Committee on Ways and Means recently approved this bill, marking a significant step forward. This legislation is critical as it aims to better align the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) trade program with America’s national security interests. By adjusting beneficiary country designations under the GSP, we strengthen our ability to counter countries deepening economic, diplomatic, and military ties with our adversaries, and those undermining U.S. foreign policy. These reforms are essential in ensuring that the U.S. effectively employs the GSP to confront the growing aggression of countries like China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea.
