Senator Rick Scott July 20, 2024

Friends,

I’ve been hearing from Floridians and folks across America asking questions about what’s happening with the federal government’s investigation of the assassination attempt on President Donald J. Trump, the murder of an innocent American and serious injury of others during the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13th. There is a lot of information out there, some real and some not, and like I told President Biden in my letter , when there is a lack of transparency, people naturally assume the worst.

While we are grateful beyond words for the heroic actions of the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers on the ground who put themselves in danger that day to protect President Trump, it’s now clear to every American that there were gross failures in the leadership of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal law enforcement agencies that led to the assassination attempt, murder and severe injuries that occurred at this event. It is a miracle that President Trump is alive and well, but absolutely inexcusable that the deranged would-be assassin had a direct line of sight to the former president and the leading candidate for President of the United States.

It’s imperative that the American people know that the U.S. government is answering questions and holding people accountable for the failures that led to this totally preventable tragedy. The Biden administration can’t wait until the investigation is complete to release details. It needs to start today. FBI Director Wray, USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle, and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas should be holding a daily public press conference to share updates with the American people and answer questions about what happened, who is being held accountable and how we make sure it never happens again. As I have stated multiple times since Saturday, the security of our Republic is being questioned and we, as a nation, deserve answers.

MAKING WASHINGTON WORK

Sen. Rick Scott Demands Immediate HSGAC Hearing to Get Answers on Attempted Assassination of President Donald Trump

Following the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump, Senator Rick Scott released the below statement demanding an immediate hearing in the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC), before August 1st, to demand answers from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Secret Service on how this happened and what steps are being taken to investigate this assassination attempt and make sure it never happens again.

Senator Rick Scott said, “The assassination attempt on President Trump and murder of an innocent American demands immediate answers from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Secret Service. It is a miracle that President Trump is alive and well but absolutely inexcusable that the deranged would-be assassin had a direct line of sight to the former president and the leading candidate for President of the United States. The U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC) has an oversight responsibility and an obligation to the American people to demand answers from DHS and the U.S. Secret Service on how this happened and what steps are being taken to investigate this assassination attempt and make sure it never happens again. Chairman Gary Peters must immediately hold a HSGAC hearing, before August 1st, with testimony from these agencies and deliver the answers that we as U.S. Senators and the American people demand and deserve from our government. The security of our Republic is being questioned and we as a nation need answers.”

Sen. Rick Scott Calls for Transparency & Accountability from Biden Admin Following Assassination Attempt of President Donald Trump

Following a briefing from the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump, Senator Rick Scott released the following statement.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I just got off a call with the FBI and U.S. Secret Service regarding the gross security failures that allowed for an assassination attempt on President Trump and the murder and severe injury of other innocent Americans. First, I am very appreciative of the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers that put their lives on the line following the shooting to protect President Trump. They are heroes.

“While I appreciate the efforts of the FBI and USSS to brief members of Congress on their work and conduct a thorough investigation, the Biden administration must also share this information with the public. There is a lot of information out there, some real and some not, and the Biden administration has got to start being open with Americans about what happened, who is being held accountable, and how we make sure it never happens again.

“As I said on Saturday, the security of our Republic is being questioned. The Biden administration can’t wait until the investigation is complete to release details. It needs to start today. It is imperative that FBI Director Wray, USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas hold a daily public press conference to share updates with the American people and answer questions about what happened, who is being held accountable, and how we make sure it never happens again.”

Trump, murder of innocent American Corey Comperatore, and serious injury of others.

This letter follows yesterday’s briefing of Senator Scott and his Senate colleagues from the USSS and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Senator’s demand for a daily public press conference  from FBI Director Christopher Wray, USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to share updates with the American people and answer questions about what happened, who is being held accountable, and how we make sure it never happens again.

Sen. Rick Scott & Sen. Jacky Rosen Renew Call to Pass Their Bipartisan Bill to Punish Corrupt Politicians Convicted of Felonies & Safeguard Taxpayer Dollars

Senator Rick Scott and Senator Jacky Rosen renewed their call for the House of Representatives to pass their bipartisan legislation  to bar Members of Congress from collecting taxpayer-funded pensions if they are convicted of felonies related to their official duties. Their No CORRUPTION (Congressionally Obligated Recurring Revenue Used As Pensions To Incarcerated Officials Now) Act  would prevent Members of Congress from continuing to receive these taxpayer dollars post-conviction by dragging out the appeals process. Last year, this bill passed the Senate , and it has been awaiting action in the House of Representatives.

Senator Rick Scott said, “If we are going to make Washington work for American families, we need real reforms that hold politicians accountable and protect American taxpayers. It is unthinkable that a former member of Congress could be convicted of a crime involving public corruption and still benefit off of the taxes paid by hardworking American families. I’m proud to sponsor this bipartisan, commonsense legislation to prevent criminals from getting taxpayer-funded retirement benefits and urge my colleagues in the House to pass it without delay.”

As Debt Approaches $35 Trillion, Sen. Rick Scott Shares Weekly Update on Biden’s Inflation Crisis, Introduces Solutions to National Debt Disaster

As the national debt approaches $35 trillion, Senator Rick Scott released a weekly update on his actions to address America’s debt crisis and rising inflation. Earlier this month, Senator Scott joined Senator Mike Braun, both members of the Senate Committee on the Budget, to introduce three bills to increase transparency on the enormous spending levels in the federal government and to address the unsustainable national debt. Following the introduction of the bill package, Senators Scott and Braun released the following statements.

Senator Rick Scott said, “While Washington’s wasteful spending is fueling our massive $35 trillion national debt, our net interest costs total nearly $900 billion—that is more than our defense budget wasted with no return for American taxpayers. It is unsustainable and irresponsible. Every dollar Washington politicians add to our national debt makes it more difficult for families to live their American Dream. Under Democrats’ reckless agenda, prices keep going up, interest rates keep going up, and taxes keep going up, but Democrats want to dig the economic hole deeper. I am proud to join Senator Braun to introduce these solutions so we have a plan to tackle the massive debt that is crippling Americans everywhere before it’s too late, and I urge the Senate to immediately consider them.”
