Providing Accountability, Transparency, and Oversight

On July 13, the American people witnessed a catastrophic security failure that not only resulted in the death of an innocent American, but nearly resulted in the loss of President Trump’s life—which could have been prevented. On Monday, a bipartisan group of my colleagues and I traveled to Butler, PA, the site of the campaign rally where the assassination attempt on President Trump took place. Seeing the grounds firsthand, it was crystal clear that there were critical failures in the planning and implementation of the security of the former President that day.

This week, the House Homeland Security Committee held a hearing examining the events surrounding the July 13 assassination attempt. I questioned Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, on the facts and circumstances that led to the assassination attempt.

In an effort to find the answers that the American people deserve, the House of Representatives unanimously passed H. Res. 1367, the Establishing the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump this week. The goal of the task force will be to understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination; to ensure accountability; and to prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again. Congress has a duty to conduct oversight and provide accountability for the American people, and this bipartisan task force will help us uncover the facts and ensure such failures never happen again.

Honoring our Local Heroes

Our community is home to thousands of brave first responders who serve our neighborhoods every day. This week, I met with Pasco County Firefighter, Walter Price, and the loved ones of brave local firefighters who lost their lives due to exposure to cancerous carcinogens during their service.

Firefighters go above and beyond to ensure our safety, and it is my honor to ensure first responders and their families receive the care they deserve. To demonstrate my unwavering support for our courageous local first responders, this week, I co-sponsored the Honoring our Fallen Heroes Act, which will offer support for families—just like the Riley and Tucker families—of firefighters who pass away from cancer due to harmful exposure in the line of service.

As your Representative in Congress, I will always stand with our firefighters and first responders and ensure that our men and women on the frontlines have the tools they need to keep our communities safe.
