June 9, 2024 Dear Floridian: This week on the House floor, I honored the 80th anniversary of D-Day by reading General Eisenhower’s letter to his troops on the eve of the invasion, reflecting on their courage and sacrifice. I am also thrilled to announce a new cybersecurity training program at USF Sarasota-Manatee, made possible by my $2 million federal appropriations request. This program is aimed at empowering FL-17’s veterans, first responders, and critical infrastructure employees by offering them priority admission. Thank you to USF for their vision in creating this new opportunity. I advocated for my amendment on the House floor this week to ensure the VA’s resources are dedicated solely to our veterans, preventing funds from being used to process medical claims for illegal immigrants. I’m glad to report my colleagues agreed, and my amendment passed the House. Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day on the House Floor
As the U.S. House commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day this week, it was my honor to read General Eisenhower’s letter to his troops on the eve of D-Day. It’s an inspiring letter that continues to be remembered by generations of Americans. “You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.” 80 years ago, heroes from across the Allied nations stormed the beaches of Normandy, paving the way for victory in World War II. Their unparalleled bravery and sacrifice ensured the freedom we hold dear today. Let us honor their legacy and remain steadfast in our commitment to freedom.

Announcing New Cybersecurity Training Program at USF Sarasota-Manatee
I am thrilled to announce a new cybersecurity training program at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, made possible by a $2 million federal appropriations request that I secured. This program will prioritize admission for military veterans, first-responders, and critical infrastructure employees from Florida’s 17th Congressional District, ensuring those who have served our community receive valuable opportunities to advance in this in-demand field. With nearly 30,000 unfilled cybersecurity job openings in Florida, this initiative will significantly impact our workforce and community. My heartfelt thanks go to USF for their partnership and dedication to addressing this crucial need. This program will undoubtedly make a difference for many Floridians and our workforce in Southwest Florida.

Advocating on the House Floor for my Amendment to Prevent the VA from Using Resources on Illegals
This week, I advocated in support of my amendment to prohibit the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from using any funds to process medical claims for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In December, I led a letter with 23 other Republican members to the VA after reports emerged that the VA had contracted with ICE to handle medical claims for illegal immigrants in ICE custody. While the underlying bill already prevents the VA from directly providing benefits to illegal aliens, my amendment ensures that VA resources remain focused solely on veterans. Veterans continue to face unacceptable wait times for medical care and disability benefits, with the VA’s disability claim backlog nearly tripling under the Biden Administration. VA resources should be exclusively dedicated to veterans and their survivors. Congress appropriates funds to the VA to provide services to our veterans, not illegal immigrants. Our veterans served our country, and it is high time our government starts serving them properly, not illegal immigrants who break our laws.

“U.S. Rep Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, a longtime Trump supporter, blasted the verdict in a statement to the Herald-Tribune. ‘A disgrace to our judicial system and constitutional protections of equal justice for all. Americans see right through the Democrats’ scheme. This is nothing but election interference. President Trump will get justice on appeal,’ Steube said.”
