Congressman Greg Steube August 4, 2024

August 4, 2024

Dear Floridian:

We are closely tracking Tropical Storm Debby as it moves through the Gulf. We are expecting heavy rains, coastal flooding, and storm-surge in low-lying areas throughout Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties. Please stay tuned to your local news alerts and FloridaDisaster.org/Updates  for conditions in your specific area.  This morning, the White House approved Florida’s request for a Disaster Declaration to authorize FEMA assistance throughout Florida, including Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties. As Hurricane Season continues, be sure to review your family’s emergency plan and check your disaster supply kit .

The U.S. Senate failed to pass the Bipartisan Tax Package on Thursday, which included my legislation to provide disaster tax relief. I’m urging the Senate to expeditiously vote on my widely supported and bipartisan stand-alone bill, The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. Millions of Americans, including many Floridians recovering from Hurricane Ian, remain in desperate need of federal disaster tax relief.

I strongly condemned the Biden-Harris DOJ’s sweetheart plea deals with the terrorists responsible for orchestrating the 9/11 attacks. The plea deals were grave injustice to the nearly 3,000 American victims and their families. Only after much backlash from Congress and the victims’ families did Biden’s Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin finally reverse the originally-accepted plea deals late Friday night.

We saw a male boxer beat up a woman in the Paris Olympics in the female category this week, even despite the male previously failing gender tests. Earlier this year, I introduced a bill, The Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act to ensure only females compete in USA Women’s Olympic Events. I continued that fight by cosponsoring The Defining Male and Female Act, newly introduced legislation to establish a clear and consistent biological definition of male and female.

Urging an Expeditious Vote on the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act in the Senate

This week, the Bipartisan Tax Package officially failed in the Senate. Now, the Senate MUST take up my widely supported and bipartisan stand-alone bill, The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. Millions of Americans, including many Floridians still recovering from Hurricane Ian, are in desperate need of federal disaster tax relief. Without this critical support, many families will continue struggling financially to rebuild their homes following Ian. It shouldn’t be this hard. The American people deserve relief, and the U.S. Senate is holding it up. It’s far past time to ensure that those affected by natural disasters receive the relief they urgently need.

Forcing the Biden Administration to Reverse Plea Deal with 9/11 Terrorists

9/11 victim families and Americans across the country were rightly outraged this week over the announced plea deal with the killers behind the 9/11 attacks. The terrorist accused of plotting the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and two of his accomplices have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy and murder charges in exchange for a life sentence rather than a death-penalty trial at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. This plea deal was a complete failure to hold these cowardly terrorists responsible for taking nearly 3,000 American lives. Last year, I introduced the No Plea Deal with Terrorists Act to prevent the Biden Administration from accepting plea deals for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the other 9/11 orchestrators. Mohammed and his accomplices should not escape a public trial and capital punishment. The victims of 9/11 and their families deserve justice, but Biden and Harris’ DOJ instead crafted sweetheart deal with terrorists. Only after much backlash from Congress and the victims’ families did Biden’s Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin finally reverse the originally-accepted plea deals late Friday night.

Cosponsoring Legislation to Define Male and Female

This week, we saw a male beat up a woman in the Paris Olympics in the female category, even despite the male previously failing gender tests. Earlier this year, I introduced a bill, The Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act to ensure only females compete in USA Women’s Olympic Events. I continued that fight by  cosponsoring H.R. 9218, The Defining Male and Female Act, newly introduced by Rep. Mary Miller of Illinois. The bill establishes a clear and consistent biological definition of male and female. The Biden Administration has changed the definition of sex to include a subjective “sense of gender,” which has caused young girls and women to be subjected to males in female-only spaces such as bathrooms, locker rooms, and their rule eventually requires admittance of males to female sports teams and competition categories. We must stand up for the rights of women and girls across America. Nothing is fair about permitting men to invade women’s spaces and take away their scholastic and sporting opportunities.

POLITICO | Senate blocks bipartisan tax package
“Smith also tacked on a popular disaster relief bill by Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.), which would have provided tax benefits for victims of wildfires, hurricanes and other natural disasters in 45 states. In the end, Senate GOP tax writers had a litany of complaints about the package that proved insurmountable.”
