Listening to Floridians

Dear Friends:

It was great to be back in the district last week meeting with constituent small business owners, workers, customers and community leaders.

I enjoyed visiting with Owner, Marc Waller, General Manager, Nathan Pettinato of Country Village Power Equipment and Golf Cars located in the City of Webster. It was great to tour their large facility featuring American made products and view their impressive golf car show room, which features custom built Yamaha Golf Cars. Thank you, Marc and Nate, for opening Country Villages Power Equipment in 1999, providing excellent products, parts and service to residents in Webster and surrounding areas!

I also enjoyed saying hello to a dedicated customer and friend, Lynn Dobson!

I joined the Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway for their June meeting to hear about their work to promote and preserve the heritage of Sumter County, and to share a Congressional update. The Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the natural beauty, recreational opportunity and history of Sumter County. As Floridians, we know the importance of our States’ rich history and natural beauty. I applaud their work to preserve the history of our community for the benefit and enjoyment of generations to come.

I visited with Founder and U.S. Veteran, Evelisse Bookhout of Hands of Hope America at Four Corners Community Center in Clermont. I also had the opportunity to speak with their summer campers! In 2023, Hands of Hope assisted 8,000 individuals and 5,000 families through their food bank and various programming. Thank you to Evelisse and Hands of Hope America for all the work you do in the community, especially with mentoring at-risk youth and church youth groups in our community!

I had the opportunity to visit Lake Sumter State College at their Four Corners Campus. Dr. Heather Bigard, President, and her team shared the plans and projects for their expansion. I am looking forward to seeing this progress in the future! I was also honored to be presented with a letter of great appreciation for my strong support of Lake Sumter State College and my commitment to academic excellence! I will continue being an advocate for our local community in Washington.

I toured the Well of Hope Thrift Store and Food Bank with Pastors Michael and Christine Hopewell in the Four Corners. Michael and Christine pastor New Water Church in Clermont in the Four Corners. Between the thrift store and the food bank they help 2,000 families a month!

I stopped by the Showcase of Citrus in Clermont with Owner, Tara Arnold and her daughter, Heather. The Showcase of Citrus, Florida’s Fresh Air Attraction®, is a family owned and operated 2,500 acre estate cultivating over 50 varieties of citrus that began in 1989. The owners, John and Tara work together to provide guests with unique, outdoor fun, and adventure for everyone of all ages. Thank you, to the Arnold Family.

It was great to visit and tour the new Salvation Army’s Sumter County Service Center Unit, located in the City of Bushnell. This new Unit will serve South Sumter by being a place for the community to visit and gather together for fellowship, ministries, and church services! Thank you, Captain Jeremy Porter, Major Marie Harris, Daphne Simmons, Christopher Priest, and Irene Turner, for the tour. I’m thankful for organizations like the Salvation Army and their work to prioritize our community’s growth and wellbeing. I am also thankful to everyone who has dedicated their lives to serving the community at the Salvation Army Lake and Sumter Counties Service Unit Facilities.

If you are seeking assistance or want to become a volunteer, you may find the Sumter County Service Unit at 870 N Main Street, Bushnell, FL 34788, or you may call them at 352-568-2284.

Standing for Life

2 years ago today, the Supreme Court restored the right of the people and their government to protect the lives of the most vulnerable – the unborn. For decades, I have sponsored, cosponsored and supported legislation that protects the rights of the unborn, and opposed attempts to remove nearly all pro-life protections for the unborn or allow taxpayer funds to pay for abortion services. I have also worked to improve moms access to prenatal care and healthcare. I encourage you to fight for life, and I will continue to do the same in Congress.

Shoreline Infrastructure Clarity

I along with Senator Marco Rubio and my colleagues in the Florida delegation sent a letter urging House and Senate leadership to support Florida’s proposed fix to an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers misinterpretation of law which is hurting hurricane risk reduction projects. As a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I have proposed a solution and am working to convince committee leadership and colleagues to approve it. This letter makes clear that their broad support across the Florida Delegation to update the law to stop the Corps from imposing burdensome requirements on local project sponsors in violation of existing project construction agreements. Our provision would protect Floridians by providing clarity for local project sponsors as they construct storm surge-resistant shoreline infrastructure.

Get Ready to Save Money

Earlier this year, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Freedom Summer Sales Tax Holiday, to help make summer more affordable for families. The tax holiday runs the entire month of July, making items like fishing gear, outdoor equipment, admissions to state parks and museums sales tax free. This sales tax holiday will help families save money this summer to enjoy the many attractions and wonders Florida offers.

Congrats Students

Cindy Brown, my Community Relations Representative for Sumter County, attended the Better Life Academy Graduation Ceremony recently to present congratulatory letters to seven students. Since 2015, the Better Life Academy has implemented a transformative educational program to help students grow both in and out of the classroom. I am grateful for the excellent education my constituents have received and the successes they have achieved at Better Life Academy. Congratulations to Dr. Cheryl Guerrero, PhD., Clinical Director; Jennifer Haines, Academy Director, Faculty and staff, 12th grade graduates, and their families and friends!

Constituent Corner

A constituent from Orange County was a victim of identity theft many years ago and had his Social Security Number (SSN) changed in the 1990’s, but recent occurrences caused him to question whether his old SSN was still valid and in use. The constituent contacted my office for assistance after having difficulties obtaining a clear answer from the Social Security Administration. My staff inquired with the agency and confirmed that the constituents old SSN was indeed inactive and that only his current SSN is valid.

Constituent services is a critical element of our congressional office. The federal government is a massive operation, and my office is available if you ever need assistance in navigating the bureaucracy or cutting through red tape. We are here to serve you.
