Simplifying Grant Access for Small Communities

Image

Smaller governments often face difficulties when applying for federal grant dollars due to the complex, time-consuming and expensive process, while larger cities with bigger budgets can hire teams of grant writers and lobbyists to apply for federal grants, giving them a significant advantage. Last week, I re-introduced the Simplifying Grants Act, to make it easier for small governments serving less than 50,000 people to apply for, receive and manage federal grants. The bill requires agencies to simplify the arduous process for all current and future federal grant opportunities. This will level the playing field and give our smaller communities in Florida and across the country a real opportunity to compete . Click here to learn more.

Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Legislation to Protect Floridians from the Woke ESG Financial Scam

On Monday, February 13, Governor Ron DeSantis announced comprehensive legislation to protect Floridians from the woke environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) movement that continues to proliferate throughout the financial sector. The Governor was joined by Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and House Speaker Paul Renner.

ESG is a direct threat to the American economy and individual economic freedom. This attempt by the corporate elite to discriminate against those who do not follow a particular ideological agenda will be outlawed in Florida.

“Today’s announcement builds on my commitment to protect consumers’ investments and their ability to access financial services in the Free State of Florida.

“By applying arbitrary ESG financial metrics that serve no one except the companies that created them, elites are circumventing the ballot box to implement a radical ideological agenda.

“Through this legislation, we will protect the investments of Floridians and the ability of Floridians to participate in the economy.

– Governor Ron DeSantis, February 13, 2023

Governor DeSantis and Speaker Renner have been leaders on this critical issue and it is wonderful to be with them today to discuss concrete steps the Legislature will take this session to protect the retirement funds of state and local employees by guarding against misguided ESG policies.

“We want our state employees and local employees – including many classrooms teachers and law enforcement who are part of the state retirement system – to have a strong retirement they can count on.

“We are going to make certain that state funds are managed to prioritize the highest return on investment, as our retirees and taxpayers expect.”

– Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, February 13, 2023

___

“The goal of corporate activism seen in environmental, social, and governance investing (ESG) is to bypass democracy and transform capitalism to serve an ideological agenda.

“We will not allow these martini millionaires to push unsafe and unsound investment practices that silence debate in the political process, weaken investment strategies for Florida retirees, and discriminate against any individual’s beliefs.

“I am proud to stand with Governor DeSantis and Senate President Passidomo to put taxpayers, investors, and Florida retirees first.”

– House Speaker Paul Renner, February 13, 2023

The proposed legislation builds upon actions taken by Governor DeSantis and his fellow trustees of the State Board of Administration to remove any ESG considerations from state investment decisions, ensuring that all investment decisions focus solely on maximizing the highest rate of return.

Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Comprehensive Lawsuit Reforms to Protect Floridians from Predatory Billboard Attorneys

On Tuesday, Governor Ron DeSantis was joined by Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and House Speaker Paul Renner to announce the most comprehensive reforms in decades to decrease frivolous lawsuits and prevent predatory practices of trial attorneys that prey on hardworking Floridians, including truckers and small businesses.

These measures include eliminating one-way attorney fees and fee multipliers for all lines of insurance, modernizing Florida’s “bad faith” law, and protecting small businesses from paying exorbitant damages.

“For decades, Florida has been considered a judicial hellhole due to excessive litigation and a legal system that benefitted the lawyers more than people who are injured. We are now working on legal reform that is more in line with the rest of the country and that will bring more businesses and jobs to Florida.”

– Governor Ron DeSantis, February 14, 2023

More information can be found HERE.

Governor Ron DeSantis Introduces Groundbreaking Legislation to Protect the Digital Rights and Privacy of All Floridians

On Wednesday, February 15, Governor Ron DeSantis announced his proposal to protect Floridians’ digital rights and privacy from Big Tech companies by creating a Digital Bill of Rights that focuses on protecting Floridians’ privacy, protecting minors from online harms, and eliminating unfair censorship.

The proposal also bans the use of TikTok and other social media platforms with ties to China from all state government devices, and through internet services at colleges, universities, and public schools, and prohibits state and local government employees from coordinating with Big Tech companies to censor protected speech.

This proposal is for the 2023 Florida Legislative Session that begins in March.

“Our Digital Bill of Rights will ensure Floridians are protected from the overreach and surveillance we have seen from Big Tech companies.

“Today’s proposal builds on our efforts to stop Big Tech censorship and combat the malign influence of China through the removal of nefarious platforms like TikTok from any state supported activity.”

– Governor Ron DeSantis, February 15, 2023

“Big Tech has gone unchecked for too long and has been reckless with our data, causing major concerns about privacy and potentially jeopardizing sensitive state information.

“I’m proud to stand with Governor DeSantis today to give Silicon Valley a reboot and announce an audacious plan to protect Floridians and keep our children safe online.”

– AG Ashley Moody, February 15, 2023

These executive actions and legislative proposals build upon legislation signed by Governor DeSantis in 2021 that required social media companies to be transparent about their content moderation practices, allowed the Attorney General of Florida to bring action against technology companies that violate the law under Florida’s Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act, and prohibited the de-platforming of Floridian political candidates.

Supporting Florida Agricultural Producers

Image

Between an extreme hurricane season and ongoing issues such as citrus greening, Florida’s citrus growers continue to navigate significant challenges. Last week, I introduced the Block Grant Assistance Act which will ensure the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) can provide needed relief to agriculture producers devastated by Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. This bill would provide the Agriculture Secretary needed authority to provide block grants to Florida to assist producers affected by recent hurricanes. Our Florida citrus industry is synonymous with the Sunshine State and the backbone of many of our rural communities. It’s critical that we support our growers in their time of need. Click here to learn more.

Acting to End COVID Lockdown Policies

Image

As President Biden said, “the pandemic is over.” While we are still managing COVID, we must get America back to normal, like we’ve done in Florida. This week, I supported three bills to terminate federal emergency COVID lockdown measures. These bills include:

  • The Pandemic is Over Act, which ends the Public Health Emergency declaration first issued by the Secretary of Health & Human services in January 2020.
  • The Stopping Home Office Work’s Unproductive Problems (SHOW UP) Act, which requires federal agencies to reinstate pre-COVID telework policies so federal workers can fully serve the American people.
  • The Freedom for Health Care Workers Act, which nullifies the COVID-19 vaccine requirement for healthcare workers.
  • A resolution terminating the pandemic national emergency declaration.

Securing Our National Oil Reserves

Image

For two years, the Biden administration has tapped the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in an attempt to lower gas prices. These high prices were largely the result of policies restricting domestic energy supply implemented just days after Biden took office. The SPR, created for national energy emergencies, is down 36 percent—its lowest level since 1984. Last Friday, I voted for the Strategic Production Response Act, which would prevent the president from tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for political purposes and require the Biden administration to create a plan to refill it. it. Click here to learn more.

Governor Ron DeSantis Proposes Teachers’ Bill of Rights

Unprecedented Legislation to Empower Educators, Protect Teachers from Overreaching School Unions, and Raise Teacher Pay ~

Earlier this week, Governor Ron DeSantis announced an unprecedented legislative proposal to create a Teachers’ Bill of Rights. The proposal will empower educators to be leaders in their classrooms, enact paycheck protection, reduce terms for school board members from twelve to eight years, and invest another $1 billion in teacher pay.

“This is a huge package to increase teacher pay, support teacher empowerment and protect teachers’ paychecks by ensuring they have control over their hard-earned salary.”

– Governor Ron DeSantis, January 23, 2023

The Governor’s plan includes:

  • Securing a $1 billion increase in teacher pay
  • Implementing a Teachers’ Bill of Rights
  • Enacting paycheck protection and other reforms to school unions
  • Term limiting school board members to 8 years

“We want more transparency into how school unions operate, and we are going to fight against school union haggling that holds teachers and their salary increases hostage. Partisan groups should not be given special privileges.”

– Governor Ron DeSantis, January 23, 2023

Governor DeSantis Announces Law and Order Legislation

On Thursday, Governor DeSantis announced his legislative proposal to maintain and further improve Florida’s 50-year record low crime rate, and build on previous pro-public safety initiatives.

The law and order legislative proposal includes:

  • Pushing back against the abolishing of cash bail
  • Increasing penalties for drug-related crimes
  • Stepping up human smuggling interdictions
  • Strengthening punishment for child rapists
  • Preventing the early release of sex criminals
  • Making it more feasible to administer ultimate justice to those facing the death penalty

Governor DeSantis previously implemented hallmark anti-rioting legislation, the strongest law enforcement recruitment and support initiative in the nation, and a crackdown on opioid dealers and drug traffickers.

Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Additional Funding to Support Floridians Impacted by Hurricane Ian

“We are committed to cutting red tape and getting temporary housing trailers delivered to these communities as fast as possible so they can accelerate the rebuilding process. We will continue to fund programs and fill the gaps for Floridians as they recover after Hurricane Ian.”

– Governor Ron DeSantis, January 19, 2023

When Governor DeSantis took office, he directed the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) to do whatever it took to get recovery funds out the door faster to get communities back on their feet. As a result, in the 112 days since Hurricane Ian made landfall, FDEM has obligated more than $500 million in public assistance funding.

Governor DeSantis delivered again for Floridians who were impacted by Hurricane Ian.

Florida’s Unemployment Rate Drops to Historic Low

On January 20, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that Florida’s unemployment rate dropped to 2.5 percent in December 2022, a historic low last reached in 2006, demonstrating that Florida has continued to grow and recover after enduring two hurricanes in late 2022. Additionally, Florida’s statewide unemployment rate has been lower than the national rate for 25 consecutive months since December 2020.

“Florida continues to outpace the nation and withstand negative headwinds due to federal policy. I look forward to building off our success with record tax relief in the upcoming legislative session.”

–Governor Ron DeSantis, January 20, 2023

December 2022 marks the second month in 2022 that Florida reached a 2.5 percent unemployment rate. Also, population in the Sunshine State increased to 22.2 million in 2022, maintaining the state’s status as the third largest in the nation behind California and Texas. Florida is #1 for net migration in 2022, ranking the fastest growing state in the nation with a growth rate of 1.9 percent.

Blocking Profits from Fetal Tissue

Image

One of the most concerning issues regarding the abortion industry is the for-profit sale of fetal remains to research institutions. While profiting from this practice is technically illegal, some abortion organizations use loopholes to make money indirectly. Pro-life or pro-choice, we should agree there shouldn’t be a profit motive for the sale of fetal remains. That’s why I reintroduced the Prohibiting Abortion Industry’s Lucrative Loopholes Act to close these loopholes once and for all. Click here to learn more about this legislation.

Reining in Government Bureaucracy

Image

Federal agencies have enormous power to create regulations in their areas of jurisdiction. Many are excessive and create a major burden on our economy. In its first year, the Biden White House added more than $200 billion in new regulatory costs. That’s why I cosponsored the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act, which would require every new major rule, costing $100 million or more, to be approved by the House and Senate before going into effect. With American taxpayers paying more than $2 trillion per year in regulation compliance costs, this bill could be a major boost for our economy. Click here to learn more.

Addressing the Border Crisis

Image

On Biden’s first day in office, he issued an executive order to halt construction of the border wall and end all deportations for 100 days. He ended countless other Trump-era policies, including the successful “Remain in Mexico” policy.  And last month, Customs and Border Protection had 251,487 migrant encounters at the Southwest border, which included 17 people on the FBI terror watch list. It’s past time for President Biden and the Department of Homeland Security to be held accountable for this disaster. The House will begin the critical oversight needed to get answers and push for strong border security.

Protecting American Taxpayers

ImageRepublicans wasted no time with our new House majority last week, passing several key pieces of legislation. Our first priority was the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act, which blocks the Biden administration from hiring 87,000 new IRS agents and weaponizing them against small and family businesses. This was the first step toward fulfilling our promise to stop the Biden administration’s attack on hardworking Americans.

Protecting Pregnancy Centers from Attacks

ImageLast year, our community was attacked by a group of unknown vandals who defaced the LifeChoice Pregnancy Center in Winter Haven. Sadly, this was just one of many similar terrorist attacks that occurred against pro-life organizations across the country after the Dobbs v. Jackson decision was irresponsibly leaked. I was proud to support H. Con. Res. 3, which condemns these attacks and the Born Alive Survivors Protection Act, which makes it a federal crime to fail to provide standard medical care to children born alive during an abortion. These important bills send a strong message that this hateful vandalism must be stopped and babies that survive an abortion attempt matter and will be cared for.

Serving on the Appropriations Committee

Image

Last week, I was honored to be selected as one of the newest members of the House Committee on Appropriations. This very powerful committee is responsible for drafting the twelve appropriations bills that determine how discretionary federal tax dollars are spent by the various departments of our government. These bills essentially include all federal spending EXCEPT Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and interest on the national debt. It has been many years since the House and Senate have passed all twelve appropriations bills through the process known as “regular order.” Instead, Congress has funded the government through staggeringly expensive “Omnibus” spending bills that have exploded our national debt to over $31Trillion and grown the federal government to an unnecessary and unsustainable size. Restoring regular order and fiscal responsibility to our legislative process is one of my top priorities as your representative. I take this responsibility very seriously and will work tirelessly to ensure Floridians’ hard earned tax dollars are spend efficiently and judiciously.
